In a previous life before children…

My Man and I would take time out of our careers and travel the world.

I still love the nomadic lifestyle but these days it’s limited to a pre-planned two weeks away in the school summer holidays, living out of a fully equipped car rather than a backpack.  We have two boys, two cats, umpteen chickens and a vegetable garden.  It’s not so easy to take off so I travel in my novels instead. My favourite film…

It Happened One Night (Capra, 1934). I was about 13 years old when I first watched this, and I’ve seen it several hundred times since. I love the script, the cinematography, the acting… And it captures my favourite romantic elements; a chance meeting, a man and a woman from different worlds (who don’t much like each other!) stuck together on a journey, finding love unexpectedly. I thought a lot about this film when My Man and I took a night bus along the Queensland coast in Australia, during which I came up with the basic premise of Her Outback Driver. (I go into more detail about this in my Behind-the-Scenes look, available when you subscribe to my newsletter).
